WHY NATURAL WINE?

The case for wines made with minimal intervention, maximum expression, and nothing to hide.

WHAT IS NATURAL WINE?

Natural wine is wine made from organically or biodynamically farmed grapes, fermented with native yeasts, and bottled with little to no added sulfites or other additives. It is winemaking stripped back to its essentials: grapes, time, and the hand of the maker.

There is no single legal definition of natural wine -- but the philosophy is consistent across producers worldwide. The goal is minimal intervention in both the vineyard and the cellar. Let the grapes express where they are from, not what was done to them.

HOW NATURAL WINE DIFFERS

Conventional winemaking permits over 70 additives -- from commercial yeasts and enzymes to fining agents, coloring agents like Mega Purple, and heavy doses of sulfur dioxide. Most wine drinkers have no idea these are in their glass.

Natural winemakers reject this approach. Here is what sets natural wine apart:

"Natural wine is not a trend -- it is a return to how wine was made for thousands of years before industrialization changed everything."

WHY PEOPLE CHOOSE NATURAL WINE

> TASTE

Natural wines often taste more alive, vibrant, and unpredictable than their conventional counterparts. Each bottle reflects its terroir, vintage, and unique microbiology. Expect flavors that surprise you -- funky, fruity, earthy, electric.

> HEALTH AND TRANSPARENCY

Many people report fewer headaches and less grogginess with low-sulfite natural wines. The absence of industrial additives means you know what is in your glass. Natural wine is the closest thing to an ingredient-transparent wine.

> ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Organic and biodynamic farming builds soil health, promotes biodiversity, and avoids toxic runoff. Many natural wine producers are small, family-run estates who have farmed their land for generations.

> SUPPORTING SMALL PRODUCERS

The natural wine movement is built on small-scale, independent producers -- families making wine by hand in small quantities. When you buy from Sans Honneur Wine, you connect directly with these producers.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Is natural wine organic?

Most natural wine is made from organically farmed grapes, but not all carry official certification. Certification is expensive and bureaucratic. The philosophy goes beyond labels.

Why does it sometimes taste funky?

Some natural wines have a distinct character from native yeast fermentation. Not all are funky -- many are clean, precise, and elegant. The range is enormous.

Does it contain sulfites?

All wine contains naturally occurring sulfites from fermentation. Many natural winemakers add zero additional sulfites; others add a tiny amount at bottling (under 30 mg/L vs the 350 mg/L legal limit).

How should I store it?

Store cool (50-60 degrees), dark, and on its side. A wine fridge is ideal. Once opened, drink within 1-2 days for best results.

What is orange wine?

Orange wine is white grapes fermented with their skins, giving an amber color and tannic texture. It is one of the most ancient winemaking methods, originating thousands of years ago in Georgia.
